Kew Kew Kew
12.5.24
It started with a map of the five boroughs.
After spending one season crossing the country and a second season circling the continents, it felt right to zero in on just one city for Season Three. And the show had not yet traveled to the greatest city in the world …
But how to structure it? How to keep us moving around the city in a mystery that would blow up bigtime in the finale?
I printed out a map, I wondered if it would be possible to draw a circle that would include all five boroughs. But Staten Island fouled up that plan.
Then I thought hmmm – why not start the season in Staten Island, and then create a circle around the more, well, “concentric” boroughs? And if I could find ten equally spaced “nodes” on that circle, that would be eleven episodes –
And then the finale could be the center of the circle, a bullseye at which everything had been aimed.
I cut out a circle and moved it around the map. I knew I was onto something when I realized that the edge of the circle could touch some key locations like JFK Airport, Hell’s Kitchen, Yankee Stadium, and Flatbush. And the locations that weren’t quite as famous, like Throgs Neck or Mau Mau Island? They’d only add to the mystery –
And I knew that Kew Gardens is regarded with a certain charm, it has a distinct quaint mystique. Where better to discover that the universe might just be ending?
